A Small Jersey Change, a Bigger Question About Respect??

LeBron James wearing No. 9 at Philadelphia 76ers practice might seem like a small detail. But basketball numbers carry history. James usually wears No. 6 in practice, and in Philadelphia that number belongs to Julius “Dr. J” Erving, whose jersey hangs in the arena rafters. James chose No. 9 instead, while he is expected to wear No. 23 during regular-season games.

The choice looks like a respectful nod to Erving. But it also raises a question about James’s relationship with No. 23 and the respect he says he has for Michael Jordan.

Former NBA player Al Harrington recalled that, during a 2005 conversation on a bus after a Hurricane Katrina relief game, a young James said: “When I’m done with the No. 23, they’ll never remember that dude.” The remark was Harrington’s later recollection, but it casts the number in a different light. James has also said he chose No. 23 because Jordan inspired him.

That tension is where some fans may see hypocrisy. James has spoken of wearing 23 as a tribute to Jordan, yet Harrington’s story suggests he once saw the number as a way to surpass Jordan and push him out of the conversation. Maybe that was youthful confidence. Still, it is fair to ask whether the tribute and the ambition can sit comfortably together.

The situations with Erving and Jordan are different: Philadelphia has retired Erving’s No. 6, while No. 23 is not retired across the NBA. But the comparison invites debate about what respect means—wearing a number to honour a legend, or choosing another number when that legend’s history is part of the team’s identity.

Fans will keep arguing about the greatest of all time. This jersey-number story adds a more personal question: when a player says a number represents respect, do his words and actions tell the same story?
